All students get access to email when they enrol. You will be able to access your email from any web browser that is connected to the Internet using the following URL: http://webmail.waikato.ac.nz
Waikato Gmail is hosted by Google. Incoming email is routed through Waikato, then forwarded to Google. Authentication is done in cooperation with the University and Google. Outgoing email is sent directly from Google.
What is my Email Address?
Your email address will be your username, followed by
@waikato.ac.nz (eg. jhc1@waikato.ac.nz)
Popping your Email
Students at Waikato Univeristy can do this if they have access to an Outlook program or similar email client, which will connect with their Gmail account. Info found here
What if I have another preferred email account?
Please ensure that you update your preferred email address in the JADE student administration system via the 'Me tab' in iWaikato.
What are the Benefits of Gmail?
• Email The GMail email application gives you 6GB of mail storage space.
• Google Docs Google Docs lets you work on documents and share these documents with others from any location in the world – a great aid in working collaboratively.
• Calendar The Calendar is a fully functional appointment calendar that you can share with others. The Institution will investigate the feasibility of integrating your timetable into the calendar later this year
• Accessibility Google GMail, Docs and Calendar Apps are accessible from anywhere in the world, anytime.
• Lifetime Account Because Google hosts this account, there's no expiry date. You've got it as long as you want it, even after you've left the University. You will however need to ensure your password is kept up to date and changed every 180 days.
• Other Services Other services will be enabled that will facilitate collaborative sharing of documents with your peers, with almost unlimited restrictions on storage space. We will let you know when these new services become available.

To Access Your Gmail Account
The University has accepted the standard Google terms and conditions which include reference to its privacy policy. To access your Gmail account you will need to read and accept the following terms and conditions, and understand the privacy policy.
What if I am not able to log in to my University Gmail account?
You could be using the wrong Gmail log in username. You should be using your normal university username and password. If you are a new student make sure your account has been enabled and try logging into iWaikato, MyWeb, Edlinked, Moodle or a lab computer first. All of these applications use the same system. If you cannot log into these systems then you are using the wrong details.
You can try changing your password at the Password Changer or contact the ITS Service Desk on ext 4008. Passwords must be changed every 180 days. Failure to do so will result in your account being locked. You will need to contact the Service Desk to unlock it.
What is Spam?
Spam is the term for unsolicited email, usually commercial. It is the email equivalent of junk mail, with the major difference that it costs the university money to download email. This makes spam the equivalent of advertisers making collect toll calls to you. In terms of etiquette, spam is considered the height of bad manners.
The university's spam filtering system is Symantec Mail Security®. To improve spam identification, staff members and students will no longer need to enable and/or configure the spam system - all incoming mail will be scanned by the spam filters. Depending on how confident the filters are that a message is spam it will either be held in a quarantine store or delivered to you with the subject modified. For more information click here:
